Hello everyone... PLEASE CAN YOU COME AND GET INVOLVED?
As the Dream Big Festival draws closer, we are starting to lock in final garments for the catwalk show, and work out what still needs to be done and by whom.
I've learnt that the workshop was perhaps way too open ended for some participants, but I'm happy to tell you all that we have some very specific jobs that need to be done with strong direction!
We are looking for people to help with
Cutting up patterned bedsheets and doonas and then sewing them up into patchwork panels for stiltwalking costume pants.
Assisting with costumes and props for the Dreamtime story in the opening ceremony.
Cutting out and sewing up simple smock dresses out of recycled cotton sheets for our stunning teen girls group to decorate with Batik Dye designs.
Cutting out cardboard tophats for students to assemble and decorate
Prepping ties with gesso for students to decorate with textas.
We would love some more crazy coloured backdrop sheets decorated with food dye in paint dabbers.
I still have a huge collection of plastic shopping bags if someone would like to have a crack at making a plastic bag gown or suit (or even a stilt walking costume... ??!)
And there are some other art based activities like giant puppet making happenning too
Where:
Uniting Church Op Shop in Melton South (at the new Coles complex)
When: WEDNESDAYS 4pm - 5.30pm untill September 16th
AND SATURDAYS 1pm- 4pm starting August 12th
Who: participants aged 12- 112!!!
You don't need to bring anything, just yourself and a CAN DO attitude!
If you are a participant who attended once or twice but havent been back PLEASE shoot me a private message, let me know how I may entice you back to join us again... I understand Wednesday evenings can be a hard time to commit to, so perhaps you can make it on a Saturday?!
I also understand the workshops were quite free flowing and not overly directed, which can be difficult for some people. We have some very specific things to do now, so would love to have you back!
Please share around this message to people you think may be interested. ... See MoreSee Less

Stephanie, a beautiful local lady has joined our group and has been stolen away for stiltwalking costume duty.
Donations can be left at The Uniting Church Op Shop in Melton South, clearly labeled "REDREAM FASHION SHOW" or passed onto me.

Huge thanks to the children from West Melton Primary, Staughton Sec and CALM for their creative work on a decor backdrop panel that will be used at the Dream Big Festival..... we enjoyed using food dye in dabbing bottles and spray bottles to achieve this BEAUTIFUL psychedelic stained glass effect. The true beauty of our work wasn't revealed until we held it up in front of a sunlit window.
Today's combined schools workshop at Youth Services was a success and we thank all involved

Hoop la living! Dream big Artist Imogen
Please welcome the Festival for Healthy Living Dream Big artist Imogen Brough. Thanks for joining us Imogen.
What is your arts practice or medium?
Circus artist extraordinaire and hula hoopist.
When did you start to work further FHL dream big?
One year ago.
What sort of workshops are you facilitating?
Multiple circus skills in the form of hula hooping, juggling, poi, plate spinning, clowning, acro balance and still walking.
What happens in a typical class?
I will always start with a group game to get to know and build up confidence in the group. We do stretching to avoid injury and loosen the body that helps with skills coordination and flexibility. then we run through various skills with different apparatus finally ending with a fun cool down.
Are there any themes you are hearing or focusing on with the young people?
We focus on having fun and having a laugh.
Are there any things that the kids struggle with circus?
Most kids find it hard when they drop things or struggle with a trick. But positive encouragement helps them finally achieve their goals.
What do the kids find easy?
Most kids find it easy to be silly, clowning games like Gramdma’s Undies is always a favourite
Each different activity has its own skill set. Every child responds differently depends on the activity. They feel inspired, have a sense of achievement, they respond well, to learning and the challenge of circus. It also helps with self-talk and feeling hopeless if they stuff up, helps them to overcome the” I can’t do it”.
Children love an opportunity to express themselves through the art of circus in various forms whether it be juggling, by movement or other particular apparatus that they favour.
How did you get involved in community arts
Ten years ago, as a social activity with friends.
What does Dream Big mean to you personally?
A wonderful opportunity to make people happy.
If you could give the children in the community one message what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to give it a go. ... See MoreSee Less
Liam Dream Big Artist
Artist Profiles and Video Introducing Dream Big artist Liam Monkhouse thanks for joining us Liam.
What is your arts practice or medium? Hip hop vocals, songwriting and music production.
When did you start to work for FHL Dream Big? In 2014 2015 the first school was CALM and I did a primary school, since then I visited and worked in many the schools.
What sort of workshops even facilitating? Mainly songwriting workshops about developing rap lyrics using rap hip-hop fundamentals as a medium for storytelling, such as rhythm and rhyme.
What happens in a typical class or workshop? The beginners we look at the fundamentals of rhythm and rhyme and introduce these aspects through word games and rhythm exercises. This leads on to developing their own song lyrics based on their own lives or topics of interest to the young people.
How did you get involved in community arts? I got involved in community arts in the Northern Territory through the writers Centre and did a tour of remote communities to facilitate the songwriting program. From there I connected with various community arts groups including FHL.
Are there any themes you are hearing or focusing on with young people? In CALM there were themes of family disconnection, community issues such as ICE use and with the younger students, the emphasis was more on finding hobbies.
What does Dream Big mean to you personally? Dream Big is a platform to develop and value young people’s voices and highlight the relationship between creativity and well-being.
If you could give the children and a community one what one message what would it be?
Dream big and keep creative – watch the video below.

Artist Profiles Q & A - Young Philly- MC & Workshops Facilitator
Q. When did you start to work for FHL- DREAM BIG?
A. In 2014 initially with the Sisters and Brothers Project.
Q. Could you explain what that is?
A. Sisters and Brothers project creates dialogue about commonalities and differences in culture and how we can be an active bystander in a situation of race based discrimination, through music and workshopping. FHL Sisters and Brothers worked at multiple schools in Melton in 2014, 2015. I am still active with S & B but working for Dream Big as a freelance artist.
Q. What sort of workshops are you facilitating?
A. Music, rapping, and beat-boxing, rap n pen tap, and tapping is something we didn't foresee. Pen tapping is percussion using pens and table tops and it fits by providing rhythm under lyrical writing. Rap is words over rhythm that then take shape in a rhythmic flow or cadence. Beatbox is vocal percussion sounds imitated through various vocal tricks.
Q What happens in a typical class?
A. We have a big piece of butcher paper that we write lyrics on and then revise the words collaboratively. WE might add on a few more lyrics and continue the process of pentapping and reciting to ensure they flow rhythmically, sound good and make sense.
Q.Are there are any themes you are hearing or focusing on with the young people?
A. School experience, friendships.
thank you Young Philly MC ... See MoreSee Less

Dream Big at Melton Secondary 2017. In term 1 2017 Melton Secondary schools year 7's started the new school year with some inspiration, encouragement and fun workshops that became a lunch time Arts club. The students creatively made themselves at home, trying out different activities with the visiting artist team. Various activities have been running, Circus skills and hip hop dance, rap and beat boxing as well as pen tapping, film making, visual arts and Aboriginal culture. Last week some of the students got to share some of their efforts at the Year 7 Getting to know you BBQ. We had a lovely colourful 'Welcome 2 year 7 BBQ' sign and a large sheet of paper taped to the wall where everyone could explore the theme/ prompt of ' DREAM BIG-FEEL GOOD'. What makes you feel good? Philly and Liam (visiting musicians, rapper extraordinaire's), facilitated the open mic for kids to vocal freestyle. We had some great comedy, a bit of dancing and plenty of getting to know you. Stefan interviewed and did film work with some student assistants.
So we are inviting friends and community connected to the school to reach out if they would like to be involved in any way supporting the after school ARTS CLUB that we hope to get off and running soon. I am sure many of you have some fantastic skills we could all benefit from, and the kids would love to have you around. What a fantastic opportunity to do something creative together! Below are some photos of some of the Visual arts work and the Year . 7 BBQ evening as well as some 'Rap n pen tap'. ... See MoreSee Less

Run away with the circus at dream big.
Introducing one of Dream Big's exceptional artists...... Imogen Brough.
Imogen brings 10 years of experience of Circus arts to Dream Big.
A strong background background in teaching Juggling, Acroblance, hula hooping, poi , staff, diablo, clowning, devil sticks and spinning plates for various circus and fitness businesses all over Melbourne and New Zealand.
All classes and events conducted by Imogen has required well organised class plans with many skills and games depending on various age groups.
Safety is a huge component in training circus with large number of children (15 – 25) so having an eye on all whilst helping individuals is crucial.
Regular positive encouragement is just as important especially when children are met with such challenges of learning a new skill.
During all of her experience in these various positions and roles Imogen feels so completely rewarded and honoured to have touched so many little lives. I think it is a wonderful thing to be able to impart something positive on the life of a child that they will remember into their adulthood. ... See MoreSee Less
